ADMISSIONS
(Approved by Carpenter’s Governance Council on Feb 21st, 2013. LAUSD approval pending.)

ADMISSIONS STATUS: WEBSITE UPDATED ON 04-05-2013

RESIDENT APPLICANTS
At the close of the Application Period, Carpenter Community Charter has available space for all resident applicants.  You should have received an email informing you of your admission status.

Resident applicants must be residents at the start of the school year to enroll as students at Carpenter.

Carpenter also has space for all non-resident sibling applicants who applied during the Application Period.  You should have received an email informing you of your admission status.

NON-RESIDENT APPLICANTS
Carpenter conducted a Non-Resident Waitlist Lottery on April 3rd, 2013.  As an affiliated charter school, we are required to conduct this lottery for non-residents annually.  Anyone interested in obtaining the priority number for students who were entered in this lottery should contact our office.  This Lottery established an ordered Waitlist for each grade level for non-resident applicants should spaces become available at the start of the new school year.  See NON-RESIDENT APPLICATION for more information.

CARPENTER COMMUNITY CHARTER (CCC) ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ADMISSIONS

Who can apply for admission to Carpenter Community Charter (CCC)?

Carpenter Community Charter (CCC) is a highly-desired neighborhood school. Primary enrollment preference is given to students who reside in CCC’s attendance area (see LAUSD school finder.) Non-resident students are encouraged to apply and will be admitted by Non-Resident Waitlist Lottery if space is available. CCC also provides for the education of non-resident students based on the LAUSD’s Desegregation and Integration Policies.

How do I find out if CCC is my neighborhood school?

The LAUSD School finder will help you find your neighborhood school LAUSD school finder.

Do not apply as a resident if you reside outside of school boundaries. If a question about your residence arises, we have the responsibility to check.  This may be done by requesting additional address verification documents, and actions such as, but not limited to, calling apartment managers or conducting a home visit at the address you have provided.  Carpenter is now equipped with address verification technology and can determine, with high probability, whether you have provided a false address prior to enrollment. If, after enrollment, it is found that you falsified your address, we are required to transfer your child out immediately.  This would be very difficult for your child.

Students applying as residents MUST be residents within Carpenter’s District-defined boundaries at the start of the school year.

When can I visit CCC?

School Tours are open to all prospective families and will be conducted on January 11th, 2013 and again on March 14th, 2013. Tours will begin in the school auditorium promptly at 8:15 am. Reservations are not required.

How do I apply to Carpenter Community Charter?

The First Step - Fill out the online information sheet

Fill out our ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET, on which you will indicate whether you are applying as a resident or non-resident.

To be considered for the Application Period Lottery (should one occur), you must first fill out the ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET  by March 22nd, 2013. See What is the Application Period? (Below) and RESIDENT APPLICATION for further requirements and information.

What is the Application Period?

The Application Period, February 27th, 2013 - March 22nd, 2013, is the time period when you must fill out the ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET  to receive an Application Packet and be entered into the Application Period Lottery (should one occur.) If you filled out an online information sheet prior to February 27th, 2013 for admission to the 2013-14 school year, you DO NOT need to fill out the online information sheet again.  Only residents and non-resident sibling applicants will receive Application Packets. If you do not receive an Application Packet postmarked by April 9th, you will not be entered into the Application Period Lottery. Completed Application Packets are due by May 24th 2013.

I was not able to fill out the information sheet during the Application Period; what are my options?

RESIDENT APPLICANTS, see RESIDENT APPLICATION, SPECIAL CONDITIONS

NON-RESIDENT APPLICANTS, see NON-RESIDENT APPLICATION

I’ve heard that there may be a lottery for resident applicants; is this true?

CCC administration will not know whether there will be a lottery for resident students until about two weeks after the close of the Application Period. ADMISSIONS STATUS (top of this webpage) will be updated to indicate whether or not an Application Period Lottery is necessary. Please see What is the Application Period? (above) and RESIDENT APPLICATION) for more information. Also, check this website for up-to-date information.

 RESIDENT APPLICATION

After successfully completing the ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET, you will receive an Application Packet by mail. If you receive an Application Packet in the mail postmarked by April 9th, 2013, you will automatically be entered into the Application Period Lottery (should one occur).

Only residents will receive Application Packets. If your residence cannot be verified by April 9th, you will not be eligible for an Application Period Lottery if one is required.

Application Packets for the 2013-14 school year will be mailed throughout the Application Period, February 27th - March 22nd, 2013. To be considered for the APPLICATION PERIOD LOTTERY (should one become necessary), you must complete the following two steps:

  1. Complete the ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET by March 22nd, 2013. You will receive an email confirmation upon completion.
  2. Receive an Application Packet postmarked by April 9th, 2013. If your residence cannot be verified by April 9th, 2013, an Application Packet will NOT BE MAILED to you and you will NOT be considered for the Application Period Lottery.

A note on residence: LAUSD considers a child’s residence to be the place where that child actually lives. For example, if you own or lease property within CCC’s boundaries but do not reside at that address, you may not use that property’s address to apply for admission to CCC; LAUSD and CCC consider such an application to be fraudulent.

Non-residents must fill out the ONLINE INFORMATION SHEET from January 11th to March 14th by 4 p.m. to be included in the Non-Resident Lottery. This will provide them a spot on the Non-Resident Waitlist when the Non-Resident Lottery is conducted (see LOTTERY FOR NON-RESIDENT WAITLIST.) Non-residents who fill out the information sheet after the Non-Resident Lottery will be added to the end of the Non-Resident Waitlist on a first-come, first-served basis.

APPLICATION PERIOD LOTTERY AND APPLICATION PERIOD LOTTERY WAITLIST

About two weeks after the close of the Application Period,

ADMISSIONS STATUS (top of the ADMISSIONS webpage) will be updated to indicate whether or not an Application Period Lottery is necessary.

  • If CCC does not expect to reach its capacity, all address-verified resident applicants will be admitted pending final residence verification at the beginning of the school year. Non-resident sibling applicants will also be admitted. Applicants will be notified via email of their application status.
  • If CCC expects to reach its capacity, an Application Period Lottery will be conducted. All applicants who meet the criteria for the Application Period Lottery (see RESIDENT APPLICATION and NON-RESIDENT SIBLING APPLICATION) will participate in the lottery. Lottery participants will be notified shortly after the lottery via email of their application status.

Enrollment preference is as follows:

  1. Siblings of currently-enrolled (TK-4) resident students.
  2. Resident re-applicants who were not enrolled the previous year due to space limitations.*
  3. New resident applicants.
  4. Siblings of current (TK-4), legally-enrolled non-resident students.

* Resident applicants not admitted during an Application Period Lottery for the upcoming school year will be given preference for admission to CCC for the following school year, provided they reside within the school’s boundaries and re-apply the following year. This preference applies only if there is an Application Period Lottery two years in a row. This preference is not applicable in 2013.

All Application Period Lottery participants not admitted during a lottery will be put on an Application Period Lottery Waitlist for admission should space become available.  Applicants admitted through the Lottery are required to provide completed Application Packets by May 24th, 2013. Resident Applicants must pass a residence check shortly before school begins before they will be enrolled at Carpenter.

If you are a resident and are applying after the Application Period, please submit completed application documents, as the school may not yet have reached capacity. If capacity has been reached, applying will give you a spot on the Waitlist. Applying will also give you preference for the following school year in the event you are not admitted for the current year. You would also need to re-apply the following year.

If an Application Period Lottery is necessary, it will occur on April 18th, 2013 at 6:00 pm in the Carpenter auditorium. It will be a random drawing conducted in public. You are welcome to attend the drawing, but attendance is not required.

Application Period Lottery applicants will be notified shortly after the lottery via email of their application status.

OPEN LOTTERY POSITIONS

At some time between the date of the Application Period Lottery and through the first month of the school year, a representative of the administration of CCC will notify waitlisted Application Period Lottery applicants if space becomes available for them.
